DAY 2 ON THE WIND SURF IN BARBUDA

Barbuda | Scenic Sail Away | Wind Surf Nightlife

Good morning Barbuda. Our first view on our first morning from the deck is of gorgeous blue skies, clear turquoise water and a long sliver of beach lined by trees behind it. After a few quick sunlit photos it is off to breakfast on Star Deck (top deck) at the Veranda. There are a few seats inside with air conditioning but who would settle for that when you can have the Caribbean breeze and fabulous views from the deck.

The breakfast menu will be the same every day but it is extensive. I found myself rotating among my three or four favorites. There are plenty of hot and cold items from those separate buffets. There is also an Omelet Station with at least 10 different toppings to select from. But the menu is extensive with Tomato Basil Benedict, Classic Eggs Benedict (see my photo), Stuffed French Toast, Blueberry Pancakes, Waffles Your Way, and a Ham and Swiss Cheese Croissant. I loved the breakfast every day and the surrounding views were outstanding.

Barbuda is a sister island to Antigua in the middle of the Leeward Islands. It is a very small island with a population of only about 1,600. There is next to nothing of note on Barbuda. The one worthy attraction is the Frigate Bird Sanctuary, home to over 170 species. The Wind Surf is anchored so we tender ashore. If you want some beach time here you better get moving - we are only here from 8am until 12:30pm.

The main event in Barbuda is the beach, many of them are pink in color. You can grab a cab and venture to any of the many beautiful beaches but there is a long sand beach within walking distance of the ship. That's what we did and what we recommend.

We found John's Beach Bar & Grill for our base. We rented lounge chairs and an umbrella for a few $, and cold beers and drinks were reasonably priced. However we suggest you don't indulge in ordering food. Prices are prohibitive and you will be back onboard with plenty of time for lunch. This beach is so picturesque, and almost private. Only a few souls ventured here from the ship. Went for a long walk along it and chilled out on this nearly deserted beach as long as possible before venturing back to the ship.

With a short day in port, everyone returned to the ship and descended on the Veranda for lunch at about the same time. No worries, tables became available quickly and a great lunch was had, as we sailed away from tiny, pretty Barbuda.

Soon after departing we experienced the scenic Sail Away; one sail at a time being unfurled under blue skies and to dramatic music. The rest of the afternoon was spent enjoying the decks, pools, hot tubs, sun and passing the picturesque nearby islands.

Tonight I ventured to the Compass Rose where I met the lovely couple of Amy & Ludo, better known as Mellow Yellow Duo. They took requests and performed twice nightly in this indoor/outdoor bar venue. They are extremely talented and kept guests dancing and entertained some nights quite late. Well, we hit it off the first night and talked about music, traveling, and life for more than an hour after the bar closed. After this sailing they will remain on the Wind Surf while it does a 14-day Transatlantic to Europe and perform ongoing. Cheers  Mellow Yellow!

DRINK OF THE DAY: Caribbean Sunset
